My search for a quality,
affordable mandolin ended with a call to STE on a Saturday morning in
1999. Not knowing if anyone would be in, I was glad to hear the voice of
Steve Burtch, who chatted with me at length about Weber instruments; what
a neat guy! The following Monday morning I called Paula and placed my
order for a Beartooth, which would be built in five weeks. After speaking
with her I knew I had made the right decision, and was looking forward to
delivery of my mandolin. The sleepless nights and bitten nails were worth
enduring. There are a lot of beautiful mandolins to be had, and some at
very high prices, but I have yet to play one that was any more beautiful
to listen to or look at. The incredibly gifted crafts-folks at STE really
outdid themselves building this mandolin! Most of my playing is related to
Christian activities in area churches, hospices, schools, assisted-living
facilities, etc. My wife and I are active in Kairos Prison Ministry and I
have been blessed to be able to play inside prison (nothing like a captive
audience). I consider myself an advanced picker, but not a performer,
however I have played in a select few civic endeavors. I play regularly at
two local jams, which really adds another layer to the joy of playing my
Weber Beartooth! I also enjoy speaking out for Weber instruments on
Mandolin Café when I get the chance; look me up there or down here on the
Alabama Gulf Coast! Ken Berner |
