Travis Thompson is the 2003 Walnut Valley
Mandolin Champion at the National Flatpicking Competitions in Winfield,
Kansas. He won the title last fall at the age of sixteen, competing
against players from all over the country. Many of them were at least
twice his age. There are two rounds of competition. In the first round
everyone plays two songs. Travis chose “The Clarinet Polka” and “Saint
Anne’s Reel.” He heard the polka on a CD and thought it would be a good
piece for the competition. Obviously it was. In the second round, the
top five finalists play two more tunes, and first, second and third place
winners are selected. Travis clinched first place with “Shafer’s Reel”
and “Red-Haired Boy.” Click
