| We
introduced the "Brekke Bridge" because we felt that it had
many advantages over the traditional adjustable bridge; we didn't
want to duplicate work that had already been done;
and we wanted to offer an alternative sound and look for players
who may not have been satisfied with the traditional adjustable
bridge.
Although the response to our new bridge
design and after market sales have been phenomenal, there have
been dealers and players who have asked us for a more traditional
bluegrass sound and look from our instruments.
To accommodate those requests, Vern
Brekke has designed a new bridge that we feel will offer that
traditional sound and look without some of the problems of the
original Loar style bridge.
We believe that both the original and
traditional Brekke bridges have value
and that the choice of which bridge to use is primarily a matter
of personal taste and playing style.
The new bridge consists of five pieces: a
base, a saddle, a brass saddle post, and two leveling
thumbscrews/nuts that support and adjust the saddle on the base.

The centerpiece of the new design is a
saddle post that supports the entire length of the saddle.
It is a single piece of brass that is cut
in a "U" shape and then threaded to accept the leveling
thumbscrews/nuts.
This post slides into holes in the base
and is adjusted up and down by the thumbscrews/nuts.
The post is pressed tightly into a slot
in the bottom of the saddle.
Because this post supports the entire
string area of the saddle, the saddle can be made much smaller
than the common Loar style saddle.
The post also insures that the saddle
will not bow or break in the middle over time.
This design also eliminates the screw
holes that were a part of the Loar style saddle.
We believe that this post gives the
bridge a more elegant appearance and better mid-frequency
functionality.
To make the bridge easier to use, the top
half of each thumbscrew has been machined to accept a 5/16 wrench.
The bridge will be supplied with a small 5/16 wrench.
This bridge may be adjusted under string
tension.
This bridge will be standard on our Fern
models and will be available as an option on our other carved-top
instruments. |
